My filter is to powerful! ?

My filter has 2 in one I think it's called a twin. It has already sucked in a guppy and my favorite cherry shrimp:( is there any way to tune it down? The tube that sucks in is like a little under an inch big. What are options as a filter that's safe for my fishes and my plants. It's a 55 gallon by the way
