A USB port should be able to source 500mA which is more than enough to power 8 LEDs. Have you definitely got the + from pin 1 and the ground from pin 4? If you have the + connected to pin 2, the TX data line, then it might supply enough current for one LED but no more and exhibit the symptoms you are seeing when you try to add more LEDs.
